The Uncommon Thread
A Relatable, Humorous Take on Life’s Every-day Musings

Big Blend Radio interviews Dr. R. Scott Anderson about his Essay Collection 'The Uncommon Thread'

A compassionate Radiation Oncologist and dedicated father of seven, R. Scott Anderson, M.D. is also an unforgettable writer. His columns have charmed readers for years in Mississippi, and he’s bringing some of those pieces out again, along with some new stories, in his collection of essays titled The Uncommon Thread.

Featured in the JOURNAL: of the Mississippi State Medical Association, Dr. Anderson’s Uncommon Thread column sprang from its progenitor Una Voce, which now continues under the pen of its founder Dr. Dwalia South. For two years Dr. Anderson had captivated Una Voce readers while the original writer engaged in both her own and her husband’s battles with cancer.

Accessible to readers of all walks of life throughout America, Dr. Anderson’s writing style could best be described as Patrick McMannus and Erma Bombeck-meet-Dr. Oz, or as Dr. South calls his work – a “scenic and hair rising ride through life.” His witty anecdotal interpretations of life’s every-day musings are inspired from his medical experiences.

“My patients and I are facing tough stuff together but you have to do it with humor, you have to do it with hope. You have to love the patients you take care of. That’s your job. That’s what they deserve,” Dr. Anderson said. “They don’t want to be miserable, they want a smile, they want to be cared about, they want a funny story, and they want you to save their life. You have to do all those things at once.”

Three of Dr. Anderson’s stories in The Uncommon Thread collection were nominated for the small press Pushcart Prize award. In addition to being a columnist, he has also written as screenwriter R. S. Anderson on several feature films, and author Russell Scott on his debut novel Time Donors Wanted (IsoLibris, 2011, Murder Mystery) and forthcoming novel The Hard Times.

Dr. Anderson serves as the Medical Director of Anderson Cancer Center in Meridian, Mississippi. He is a former Navy diver who worked in operations in the Middle East, Central America, and in support of the Navy’s EOD community, SEALS, the US Army’s Green Berets, the Secret Service, and the New York Police Department at various times during his time in the service. Having spent some years in San Diego and Virginia Beach, the author lives once again in his home state of Mississippi with his wife.
